Private Remote Allergy Clinic

What are allergies?

Allergies occur when the body’s immune system overreacts to typically harmless substances, known as allergens. Common allergens include pollen, animal dander, dust mites, and certain foods such as milk, nuts, and shellfish. These reactions can cause symptoms like itchy eyes, sneezing, rashes, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis.

Allergy symptoms:

Itchy watery eyes Cough

Sneezing

Chest tightness

Blocked nose Lip and facial swellings
Runny nose Itchy rashes
Wheezing Vomiting and diarrhoea
Shortness of breath Anaphylaxis*

*Anaphylaxis is a life threatening allergic reaction and may involve throat swelling (which affects your ability to breathe), wheezing and collapse. This requires emergency medical treatment and adrenaline injections.

Cow's milk allergy in infants

Symptoms may be immediate as above, however some infants have delayed (non-IgE-mediated) allergy where symptoms occur hours or even days after exposure. The delayed symptoms are usually gastrointestinal (eg reflux, diarrhoea and colic) or involve the skin (chronic eczema).
