Supporting our community and being true to our values
It’s been refreshing to spend a bit of time away from the office recently, meeting some of the charities which Nimbuscare has supported through its Community Fund.
Since 2022, we’ve given grants totalling £130,000 to more than 30 different community-based projects and organisations. As a not-for-profit organisation, Nimbuscare is committed to reinvesting in our wider community, as well as our GP member practices, and it’s been a pleasure to see how some of this funding is being spent.
I went with my team to meet staff at The Island, a charity which supports some of our City’s most disadvantaged, vulnerable and isolated children and young people to see how they’re using our funding to create more mentoring opportunities. We discussed a number of collaborative ideas of how we could continue to work together.
We also talked to staff, children and their families who are part of the Big Futures Foundation which supports children living in disadvantaged communities across the City. This remarkable charity is using our funding to develop more family activity groups.
We ended the week by visiting Refugee Action York (RAY) which this year committed £250,000 to supporting refugees within our community. We heard how mental health is a big issue within these families who have experienced incredible trauma and how they have been working to reduce the stigma around accessing counselling and support.
New to our Community Café
Our community work doesn’t stop there, however…We’re continuing to support local groups by offering free space within our Community Care Café at Acomb Garth.
Nimbuscare is being true to its values as we collaborate and support our community. There are now more than 10 groups using the café on a regular basis so there’s something for everyone. Thanks to everyone who has made this happen here at Acomb Garth and we look forward to having a similar space at our other Community Care Centres across York.
Expansion plans as a new Community Care Centre is born
We’ve been working hard with the local NHS to explore the development of Monkgate Health Centre in York and I’m delighted to announce that the NHS will begin building work over the summer to create another Community Care Centre for the City.
This is a really exciting development, which sits with our strategy to develop more health services in York, in collaboration with others. It also means we will have a site close to the City Centre which I know our patients will be pleased to see. We hope Monkgate will be ready to open in the Autumn of this year and I will keep you updated.
Goodbye Freya!
This week we say goodbye to Freya Kimberling, our Operational Services Administrator who leaves us to take up a very exciting role at York College. We wish her all the best and she will be very much missed.

Brain Health Café opens at Acomb Garth
This month we launched the Brain Health Café at Acomb Garth Community Care Centre, supporting people with memory concerns who need help to 'navigate' the health and care systems to get the support they need.
The first Friday of each month is an open day cafe event where a variety of providers offer support, advice and activities relating to brain health, memory concerns and community-based activities. Subsequent Fridays will be more informal, with opportunities to meet people and talk to staff from various services. The café is open to all, and is dementia friendly.
Specialist integrated woundcare event
Clinicians are invited to a specialist integrated woundcare event at Acomb Garth Community Care Centre on Thursday 30 March, 6pm til 9pm.
This is to launch the new GP referral pathway. We will be outlining the new Specialist Integrated Lower Limb Treatment Service, including the referral process, assessment & treatment pathways. The session will also include live patient case studies by Sallie O'Connell & Vicki Gunns and a tour of our new clinic rooms.
Please contact nicola.stephenson@essity.com or Julie.dickinison@essity.com for more details.

Future of General Practice symposium in York
This event on 28 April at The Grand Hotel, York, is being hosted by Nimbuscare. We have invited national NHS leaders including Prof Claire Fuller and Dame Claire Gerada, president of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGPs), as well as Stephen Eames, Chief Executive Officer of Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care System (ICS), to talk about how we can improve and learn from others. I’m sure it will be a very positive day which will help us toward improved models of care for general practice.
